Sir,

GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONG KONG, 1st February, 1933.

With reference to your telegram of

the 17th January, 1933, I have the honour to

inform you that I took the opportunity of

discussing with Sir Frederick Maze on his

recent visit to Hong Kong the question of

the Customs Agreement, but I regret to have

to report that there would appear to be little

hope of its being signed in the near future.

2. I discussed the matter also with Sir

files Lampson when he passed through Hong Kong

recently and, as he proposed to visit Canton,

suggested to him that he might take the

opportunity of raising the question with the

authorities there.

3.

He had an interview on January 6th, 1933,

with M. Lin Wen Kai, Chairman of the Provincial

Government, and Marshal Chen Chai Tong, Commander-

in-Chief of the 1st Group Army. Mr. Phillips,

H.M. Consul General, and Colonel C.W. Leung,

Counsellor at Military Headquarters and

Confidential Foreign Secretary to both the Chairman
